Nested Lengths

Shorter boards; why are they included in the box?

Boxes of timber flooring can include some shorter boards to make up the quoted plank length – these are referred to as a ‘nested lengths’. Nested lengths allow us to make full use of the tree which results in less wastage and improved sustainability.

In the example pictured left there are 6 lengths in the box, 4 full lengths and 2 nested lengths. We would define this box configuration as 33% nested lengths, containing 5 shorter boards. Depending on the wood species, nested lengths can contribute 25 – 60% of the box.

During installation the shorter boards are best used at the start or end of a row, but are also scattered within the floor, where they disappear once installed.
